Looking to get an apartment with a couple buddies somewhere in the city, but I want to be where the action is. I’m 23 and I heard Wrigelyville and Lincoln Park were good. Where should I live to meet young professionals like me?

We’d been together 4 ande a half years, and were the envy of hopeless romantics for 4 of those. She had a change of heart about a week and a half ago and now its suddenly over. Totally caught me off guard. We just signed a six month apartment lease one month ago. Its a one bedroom. She says either I move out or she moves out. I don’t really want to move to another apartment right now because I may have to move to either Denver or Chicago, but wont know which one for a few months. But I don’t want to pay full rent for this apartment in which we both signed for. I’m gone three nights per week for work, but I could increase that substantially to give her freedom until the lease runs out, and would gladly sleep on a cot in the living room the few nights per month I’m there. Should I expect her to pay for her half of the lease if she moves out? Thoughts? She’s a student and works part time. I work full time.

I’m sleeping in a sleeping bag in my very first apartment, and I’d really like a bed.

What’s the best way to get one for as cheap as possible? Good flea markets, anyone? I’ve tried craigslist, but I haven’t found anything good, and I don’t understand how to work freecycle.

Security deposits in Chicago?   December 22nd, 2008

Submitted by: Needadvicenow

Hi
I just rented a apartment here in chicago and it will be a month exactly today since I been here.
Well I have an emergency and need to leave out of the country and have to move out of the apartment as well.
I just called my landlord today to let her know and she did seem kind of upset because she told me that Im supposed to give a 30 day notice but hey Its an Emergency! so I cant do much.
I dont have a lease so its a month to month lease. My question is, can I lose my security deposit? can My landlord legally keep it?

Hey, so I live in Chicago — I came here after college because at the time I was a dirt-poor, struggling freelance writer so it was the only big city I could afford. I’m doing much better now, but I’ve become somewhat bored. The brutal winter weather is wearing on me, and I’m itching for a radical change of scenery.

My job allows me to live anywhere I want, so I’m thinking of finding a new city to settle in for a few years, and I’m thinking LA (alternative probably being New York). But I thought I’d pop in here and see if I can get a third-party sanity check on the idea! And some advice on where to live in the city if I do go this route.

Reasons for LA: And I’d like to develop friendships with fellow creative types, who aren’t quite so common in Chicago (more of an academia sort of community for people in their 20s here). Also, my parents retired in Phoenix, and it would be good to live much closer to them.

Finally, I’m a writer and producer in new media. I would like to make some connections with people in the video production end of that industry, beyond the editorial and technical connections I already have, with the aim to start a web network that features video content alongside the kind of stuff I already do. So I’d want to be near the sorts of people who produce that sort of stuff to possibly work with them or contract them.

I’ve only been to Los Angeles very briefly, about eight years ago, and it was a very touristy visit. Never saw the real city at all, so I’m not entirely sure what to expect. Spent time in San Francisco and San Diego though — disliked the former, the latter was nice but a little boring. I’ve done a lot of reading about LA, and people mostly just seem to complain about how horrible the traffic is for commuting, but I work from home so that doesn’t bother me so much.

I don’t need a lot of space, but I’m done living in slum/ghetto-type dumps with run-down buildings and loud neighbors. 1BR would be ideal but I would rather live in a studio in a nice, culturally exciting neighborhood than a 1BR in a mediocre one. I make just over 50k right now. I could spend as much as $1,500/month, but would prefer to keep it closer to $1,000.

What are my options, as far as neighborhoods go? I’ve read about a few of them but the city is so vast I can’t possibly understand everything about them all. So far Studio City sounds like the optimal balance — West Hollywood is too expensive, and a lot of other places I look into look too trashy, or are out in the boring suburban wilderness.

I’ve looked at apartment listings in Studio City and it seems to be on the pricey end but feasible — is that accurate? And does anyone have any other recommendations or advice?

Lastly, would I be a cultural match? I’m a fairly indoorsy sort of guy, but a very creative type with a business bent. My interests include cinema, literature, art (painting and sculpture), television, video games — media in general, both new and old. Also politics, philosophy, etc. Ideal Saturday would be haunting a museum, then going to see a good foreign flick, then go to something kind of interesting like a burlesque show or a downtempo electronica gig. There a lot of my sorta people in LA?

Thanks so much!

I just signed a lease for a studio in Chicago. Although, I had seen the apartment before it was never when the woman living above was at home. Well now after signing the lease 4 days ago I have realized that the floors in the building are very squeaky. I hear every step the woman above me is taking and can tell exactly where she is in her studio. This is extremely loud and would definitely disrupt my sleep and work. I know the building is old but the apartment is remodeled and looked new. I guess the woman’s above me is not. There is no way I would have signed for this place had a known how loud it was in there. I have not yet moved in, but my lease just started today. Is there any way to cancel the lease, since it is brand new and since I didn’t know it was so loud in the building?

I’m not really a party person so any apartment with a family vibe, parks, stores (malls), and maybe a club or two if I want to have a night on the town??? City Central Apts??? I really like this complex….but wasn’t able to find reviews.

I go to a private university in Chicago. Here dorms (especially apartment-style) are much more expensive that off-campus housing, even when comparting luxury apartments with many amenities included. I use rent.com, apartments.com and roomates.com website. I am not sure whether I should look for a studio for myself, or for another roomate who has a spare space which gives me at same cost living room, own bedroom and a company ;) What are advantages and disadvantages between two? Would you consider looking for apart or rather a roomate who has a place.

Besides currently I live in dorms and hate it. my roomate sits in our room 24/7 h except when he goes to classes 2 times a week. He once watched me sleep! He watches anime! He is weird? How would you cope with that if you were in my situation?

Thanks for sharing your answers!
In addition he types on his keyboard very nosily all the time. Thats why it drives me little bit a nut.
what other websites to use besieds the one I mentioned?

Hi i havent yet graduated high school, but i know where i want to go. Ive been looking into a cople places like the ones that i named above. Ive sen and read somethings about lakeveiw and it seems like a thriving town full of young people and fun. I also read that there were some good price places, a little cheap. I also read about Edgewater and the ukranian village with both sound really fun and hip…but for a good price?
maybe you can help me out with what im looking for: I love the arts. galleries, museums. i love coffee shops like starbucks, little artsy resturants that havelive music playing from all sorts. i loove all that hipsterness. but more of an indie hipsterness. ya know? I dont want to get too pricey, again i would be moving there justout of highschool so keep in the range of 150-300 dollars. not too much. apartment of course. and if i have to ride a train o a little spot that has all that than great. i want a bit of nightlife too. artsy. fun. no too pricey place forme:]

I am looking to move to Chicago?   December 10th, 2008

Submitted by: Erik with a K

I am looking to move to Chicago, my roommate is going to go to Columbia College and I am going to be attending UIC. We want to find a 2 br apartment in the area, however I do not know the name of the district I should look for. We originally thought Bucktown or Wicker Park, but have been told that is too far away for what we are looking for. All I would like is the name of some areas we should look at. Please do not give me street names, just district names (lincoln park, bronzeville, etc.) Thanks a lot!

Alright, so my boyfriend and I went to visit Chicago in early November and loved it. We went to visit a film school that he was interested in going to. We fell in love with the city, and the school and have decided to move there. Everyone thinks that we are crazy and that we aren’t going to make it. We are from a small town in Indiana, and leaving this small town and going to a city is going to be different but we are ready for the change. We are a young couple (we are both 22), so keep that in mind when you read the rest of my questions. Anyway, when we move up there my boyfriend is going to be at school 40 hours a week, and I am going to be working. I will have an Associates Degree in Marketing (I graduate in May). We will probably be living off my income but he hopes to find a part time job. I also want to find a job as a dance or cheerleading coach part time. So I guess my question is are we going to be able to survive on my income from a full time job and a part time job? Also, I have been looking at apartments on Craigslist and stuff and have found a few that are less than 600 a month (we aren’t looking for anything special or big..a studio is fine). I was just wondering are there any neighborhoods that we should stay away from? Are we crazy to think that we can find an apartment for 650 or less in a decent neighborhood? Should we live in the suburbs or is that going to be a waste of our time because we will have to be in the city everyday? Also, how soon should we look for an apartment before we move up there (moving up there in August, and we are going to visit a few more times so that he can get stuff ready for school) Personally, I think that we are going to be okay, since we aren’t going to try and be expensive or waste our money. We also have 6,000 bucks saved up for emergency money.
I guess I am just looking for some advice from some people that have been there, if anyone has any. I really appreciate it. Thanks.

(a few other things…he does plan on getting a part time job after he starts school, but we are going to use that money for groceries. Also, we aren’t looking for alot of people our age…we just want a safe(ish) place, that is priced reasonable)

There is a possibility that I will be moving to Chicago in January-February 2008 for a job opportunity. I have lived in NY all my life.. I have lived in Manhattan and also in the suburbs of NY. I have never been to Chicago and will be visiting in November.

I know that rents are cheaper than Manhattan and I am looking forward to that. I like the areas of Upper East Side Brooklyn Heights type neighborhoods in Manhattan.

What is the equivalent of these neighborhoods in Chicago?

I have a 3yr old and she will be starting pre-k next year and I was wondering what the school system is like in these neighborhoods?

Will I need to send her to a private school?

Also are these neighborhoods family orientated? Are there alot of professionals with small children living in these high rise apartment buildings?

Also can you give me some helpful websites or resources to plan this move and find out about apt’s, schools, etc..

Thanks

OK Chicagoans. I’ve always lived in the ‘burbs (Forest Park) but got a job in Pilsen and found a great apartment near California and Cermak (close to Mt Sinai Hospital). Do you live or have lived in this area? Would you recommend it. I’m 24 and don’t mind noise and such but I’m concerned about violence/gangs. Let me know why you think I may or may not like it. Thanks!

Moving to the Southside of Chicago?   November 11th, 2008

Submitted by: Dee-Dee

I am a single Black female and I just got an apartment off 85th street near State Ave. I am relocating from Texas and came up to look for an apartment and looked in Rogers Park, Edgewater, and Avondale…and believe it or not fell in love with Chatham. I liked it enough to put down a deposit and pay first months rent. What I want to know is…what is this area really like from those who live in this neighborhood. Is that Jewel a good grocery store? Is it safe to walk over to the shopping centers on the other side of the Dan Ryan and 87th street. Is the Redline a safe train to take in the evenings? Who delivers over here and where is the best place to get some good food? I will be using public transportation so keep that in mind when answering.

Thanks for anything you can tell me about my new hood. Despite all the bad things I have read about the Southside..I really felt at home in this neighborhood, and am looking forward to my new life on the Southside of Chicago! ;-)

ok so we are trying to plan to move in or near chicago. we have a travel trailer and we did that because we thought it would be cheaper going the way until we save up for a real place. we dont want to get an apartment or house right off the bat.
we currently live in spokane and its not working out for us because theres too many ppl and not enough jobs. (small town)

so im asking you were should we move in or near chicago. we will be going there with abt 4 or 5,000. thats it lol. we will stock for food before we leave because i know it will take a while to get a job. we want a place where we can go out and do things with or without money. somwhere close to the heart of chicago.but also somewhere where we could live in our RV. like a lot. idk how that travel trailer thing works out for keeping it. i want somewhere where the wage is somewhere good. ours here is almost 8. somewhere were the grass is green and its sunny. i and not a bad part of town. trying to start a family there :)

I’m looking for a 1-bedroom maybe a studio that’s accessible to public transportation…a 2-3 mile walk isn’t a problem.

I want to live in a pretty-well kept place. and in an area that’s not too crime-ridden.

I live in Chicago and it is summer (hot) now. Lately it’s been in the 80-90 degree range. I use an air conditioner (small 5000BTU) to cool my rather large one bedroom apartment but it’s just barely keeping my apartment in the low 80 degree range.

I have a pretty cool high-end 5-blade powerful ceiling fan in my living room (where I spend most of my time.) I’m a logical / technical type and I know that heat rises and cool lowers. I like the fan blowing down on me because I like the wind on my face but I think I’m defeating the purpose (am I bringing all the hot air down?)

What would be the proper setting for a ceiling fan in a large barely air conditioned one bedroom apartment? Blowing up?, or Blowing down.

Logic tells me that clowing up might be right because I might want the cool air rising up the middle of the room and the hot air clowing down the walls (the walls may cool the hot air?)

What do you think? Answers from professionals who know for sure are appreciated.
So far I’m tending to take this person’s advice (sounds logical) and all of you are contradicting yourselves (smile.) Answers say for sure THIS way, and other say for sure THAT way (?)

you want your ceiling fan drawing air up in the summer and down in the winter, so flip the fan in reverse and you’ll feel the difference.

ANYONE KNOE FOR SURE WHAT THE RULE IS?
Yes, logically, an argument can be made for each direction. I had been using it blowing up since spring. I just reversed it and I’m not sure but I think blowing UP is working better (and my cats are having fun catching all of those dust bunnies dropping off (smile.)

Breaking my lease - Chicago?   October 24th, 2008

Submitted by: Tony

I would like to learn about what my tenant rights are with regards to terminating my lease early. This morning I found out that the key that was given to me by my landlord will unlock my neighbors lock and deadbolt. This is of great concern to me as I accidentally thought I was entering my apartment but instead I walked into my neighbors apartment at 02:30 in the morning. This could have been a very dangerous situation. Also, I was mugged two weeks before where my drivers license was stolen. My license had my apartment number on it. I do not feel safe in my apartment anymore and I am outraged that it appears me and my neighbors have the same lock/key. I would like to speak with someone as soon as possible as this is causing me great amount of anxiety and I need to know what my rights are and how to proceed.

I live in a huge apartment building. I noticed a lot of dog poo in the grass outside and have stepped on it a couple of times. I unknowingly tracked it into my apartment one day where my toddler walks! I was so angry, I posted a sign that says, Clean up after your dog!! A couple of days later, someone took it down and wrote on the other side, No f-ing dog in this rent! and then reposted it. What does that even mean? I just put it back the way I had it, but fear that they are now going to mess with me even more. Do you think I am dealing with 2 sepearate issues here? (The person who changed my sign might not even own a dog) How would you deal with both? I live in Chicago. Isn’t there a law against this?
I don’t think these people live in my building. I meant neighbors in the neighborhood.

Due to a recent lack of funds, me and my roomate decided that we’re going to move off campus for my junior and senior year. Now, only problem is, we won’t start renting pretty much till August or September. When is the best time to start the search an apartment? I pretty much have till June when I go home for break, and I want to make sure I have something secured by then. Yet I don’t know when to start, and if I start now(near the beginning of March), if I will turn away the sellers.

Any answers I would appreciate, thanks!!

May move to Chicago?   October 18th, 2008

Submitted by: y3

I might be moving to Chicago later this year and I want to find a cheap studio apartment in a decent neighborhood of Chicago. I’m eyeing either the South Side, North Side, or West Side
On the North Side, I’m looking at:

Edgewater
Uptown
Lincoln Square
Rogers Park
Wrigleyville
Avondale

South Side:

Armour Square
Bridgeport
Hyde Park
Hegewisch

West Side:
Wicker Park/West Town
Ukrainian Village

Now I’m on a budget.. so I prefer the neighborhood to be working class. Without the hipsters, yuppies, gentrification, etc.

I know the safer the neighborhood — the more expensive. So I’d settle on decent. Diversity is preferred as well.
Also, fairly close to an ‘El’ line.

Open to suggestions of other neighborhoods too.

Eagerly waiting for info. Thanks! :)

I am moving to Chicago?
Can anyone tell me what my avg. monthly bill would be for a 1 bedroom (800-900) sq, ft. apartment would be for these things: gas, electric, water, cable (basic…nothing fancy)? I currently live in an area that is warm all year so I have never had to worry about a gas bill before for heating. Please help.

have bad credit, or an unverifiable job/income history? I live in Chicago, and I am ready to go just about anywhere now. I’m being evicted, and I have no job. I don’t think I would have good luck luck in the suburbs of Chicago with landlords, and I don’t like the idea of looking in bad neighborhoods of Chicago.

We live in an apartment building with four units and there are no other people occupying three of the units. About an hour ago, we discovered a huge water leak in the unit next to ours. The water boiler in the attic burst and water is flooding the attic, the level below, the floor below that one, all the way to the basement. There are several inches of water pooling in the center of each of the apartments. No water is on our side, but I’m worried about the structure of the building with that much water damage. We’ve started packing our stuff (we were planning on moving in the next few weeks). But now there is a large leak, and we are in the dead of winter. Sub zero temps, snow, etc–Chicago area.

Is it adviseable to stay in the building till we find a place, or should we just pack up and move immediately?
We have alreaady turned off the water valve.
The building is in foreclosure amd everyone left it–including the landlord. He let everyone stay till they had the money for a new place

Apartment shares?   September 20th, 2008

Submitted by: African Queen

I’m new to the US fromLondon and looking to move to a different state, not to get my own apartment but to share an apartment. i’m just wondering what sorts of documents will be needed (because i have not got any yet) or with apartment shares do you just pay rent cash in hand to the person who you are renting from?
aonther question- i’ve never done and apartment share so what are good questions to ask the roommate already there? what should i expect from roomates or apartment shares?
I’m looking to move to either somewhere in New York, or Chicago Illinois, Boston MA anywhere it would be easy to get around with the public transportation- any other states and cities in mind would help and
expriences of these cities or roommates you’ve had would be great.
thanks
ps i’m 20 years old would it be best to share with another female my age or older?
i’m not really open to sharing with a male, but should i be?

All the expenses (U-Haul, gas, packing supplies) were paid out of pocket. How much of that, roughly, can I expect to see back in my returns? Also, is the payment for 1st, last and security on an apartment due to relocation deductible?

I am a new college grad moving to Chicago this june and working very close to O’Hare airport. I am about to look for an apartment. I keep hearing Lincoln Park and Wrigleyville are the place to be, but expensive and hard to get to O’Hare. I’d really prefer to use the train system rather than drive since I know what a nightmare Chicago is. Where is a good place to look for an apartment that isn’t going to be through the roof expensive (I paid for my own college and am basically broke), that will be a younger neighborhood with things to do, and will be easy to get to the train? Thanks for the help in advance!

Ok, I have a short story then a question at the end. I am seventeen years old and will soon be sworn into the army reserves. As a sign on bonus I will be receiving $20,000. I will receive $10,000 of that shortly after graduating basic training this summer, and $5,000 the next two consecutive years. I will also receive a small monthly pay which will be more and more as I gain experience. If you dont know, the while I’m in the reserves, I will be serving one
